How important is to know the firing order in a vehicle when changing spark plugs?
Q. I don't have the repair manual for a Ford Taurus 1996 V6 3.0 litres,so i don't know the firing order,i am not replacing the distributor cap, only the plugs.is the firing order very important when changing the plugs? Thanks in advance.

A. If you take out one plug, replace it and put the wire back on, then do the next one, until they're all changed, one by one, you cannot mix them up. If you have two wires loose at the same time, there's a chance you might mix them up- only 50% chance. If you take them all off, then there's a great chance some will be on wrong unless you label them, and you would do well to know the firing order to doublecheck your work to make sure they're labeled right. The bottom line is, if you do them one at a time, you don't have to know the firing order. When you get ready to change the distributor cap, remember, one wire at a time. If you xerox the page from Chiltons Auto Repair showing the firing order diagram, that is good insurance for you, just… [cont.]

when to change spark plugs?
Q. Mileage recommendations like for oil changing exist but are imprecise. , What symptoms show they will need changing?
Asked by samderosa2001 - Wed Oct 1 00:40:28 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Check the manufacturers recommendation in the owners manual. Please ignore the ridiculous notion that they should be replaced "at least once a year" or twice "if you drive a lot". You will notice more difficulty starting and a lack of power and decreased mileage if they are in need of replacement.

A. You can take this for what you think it's worth. I bought a 2002 Toyota Tacoma in 2007. It had about 90k miles on it. I was getting about 25MPG with it, but since the outside of the plugs looked old, I decided to change them. When I pulled them out, they were so worn that the gap measured at .075". The new plugs were gapped at .035", the recommended gap. Guess what my mileage went to... 25MPG. If you have over 50k miles on it, replace them with regular platinum plugs and then forget about them forever. OH, and this isn't the first time I've noticed that plug changes didn't do much if the plugs just showed age, but it's the first time I bothered taking measurements because they were so worn out.

How to change spark plugs?
Q. Our 01 Windstar is nearing 147,000 miles and i dont think the wires or plugs have been changed? is it hard? The plugs are not really accessible at in some areas? What do i need to know when changing the plugs/wires? What can go wrong besides putting the plug in the wrong place? By not being changed i mean as in forever..lol
Asked by quepasameng - Fri Apr 3 23:31:37 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Do the front plugs first, they are easiest to get to. Pull one plug wire off at a time and do that plug. That way you won't ge the wires mixed up. I had a Windstar and I found that it was easiest to get to the rear plugs from underneath the vehicle. This is where it would be nice to have an extra set of hands. Have your helper feed the spark plug wire down from the top so you don't have to keep climbing in and out from under the vehicle to do it yourself. The most important thing is to do them one at a time so as to not get them mixed up. Hope this helps

Way to change spark plugs?
Q. I have a 94 Ram 1500 with a v8 Magnum. I just ordered 8 high performance spark plugs from jc whitney.com. I know where the plugs are in the engine, I just can t remove them. I have the proper fit tools. But when I turn the ratchet to remove the old plugs it makes a squeaking noise. Does this mean I stripped the plugs? But my main stupid question is...do you turn the plugs clockwise or counter to remove them? Yah. SplitFire, you can look them up there. They were about 7 bucks each. But thanks man.

Spark Plugs change?
Q. How can u tell when its time to change them spark plugs in ur car?Would it cause the oil to burn faster and the radiator to run out of water soon than usual?
Asked by hillbillytweetheart - Tue Jul 24 11:20:14 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Perhaps, but unlikely. The spark plugs will more than likely cause issues with your ignition and the quantity of gas in the cylinder chamber. It might also cause your cylinders to skip sequence, affecting your acceleration. Get it checked soon so that you avoid blowing a head gasket or ruining your fuel injection.

changing spark plugs when its cold? is it a bad idea?
Q. i heard that they could crack so need to know before i do it
Asked by maps_ghosthunter_ryan - Sun Feb 4 08:54:06 2007 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You are actually supposed to change the plugs when the engine is cold. Metals swell when heated and the plugs will be more difficult to remove when both the head and plugs are hot, and harder to install when the plugs are cold and the heads are hot. Snapping the ceramic on the plugs usually occurs when the socket is improperly placed on the plug, the plug is struck, or if the ratchet is cocked while turning. Sub-zero ambient temperature may make the ceramic more brittle, but I am not sure. I have changed more than my share of plugs in cold weather and have never had such a problem. Use care and all should be fine.

Oil in the 3rd cylinder of my 92 civic when im about to change the spark plugs, what does that mean??
Q. when i took the spark plug wires off the 3rd cylinder the spark plug wire was covered in oil. i still have compression in the cylinders thou, also no over heating problems. So obviously i would have to take the valve cover off, you think a valve cover kit w/Grommets & Spark Plug Tube Seals would be it?
Asked by cityof.compton - Fri Jan 26 16:22:00 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Oil is in the spark plug tube, not in cylinder. This means that the rubber washer between the valve cover and the tube is leaking. The washer can be purchased separately from a dealer or you can buy the entire set consisting of 4 washers and a valve cover gasket. If you go to a dealer for replacement, they'll charge you about $120. And you don't want to know what oil in the cylinder would mean - trust me. Fortunately, on Hondas it hardly ever happens.

Changed spark plugs, now have puffing noise, car dying...?
Q. i changed my spark plugs on a 1988 grand am 2.5 engine, singlle injector. now engine makes puffing, noise, and often dies when in drive. a lilttle smoke came out the intake aerea when i was trying to turn engine on, a bit of oil leaked from the throttle... ... bad spark plugs? i gapped them to right specs, and the cables are in the correct firing order. did a compression test and piston 2 and 3 have lower readings then 1 and 4, car was running reasonably ok b4 spark plug change thogh... any help please! thanks!
Asked by J. - Tue Oct 2 15:55:07 2007 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Backfire through the intake right after a spark plug service is almost definitely problems with the firing order if it was running fine before it. If the plugs or wires were damaged, or even if the gap was off, it would make the car run badly or not at all. Oil jumping through the intake is also a clear indication that its the firing. I looked up the firing order and spark plug arrangement online in ALLDATA at my school for the 1988 Grand AM and attached a picture here: Recheck it on your car. Good luck.

I need to remove Fuel line from engine when changing my spark plugs, do i need a special tool?
Q. Is there like a special tool i have to put in place before removing the fuel line from the engine? I have to remove it because the spark plug is right underneath it. If i do pull it out, is it possible to get air in the lines? Its a 99 Mustang GT.

A. if you're talking about the fuel line attached directly to your fuel rail then you might need a special tool to remove it depending on what type of car you have. Some cars just have a little clip that you can easily unclip, but for a lot of cars youll need a fuel line disconnector, which is essentially just a little adapter piece that you insert into the line and it pushes on the clips holding it in place without breaking them. Don't try to do it with a screwdriver or anything else becuase you most likely WILL break those clips, the adapter piece is not expensive and its not hard to find. Just one note is, before disconnecting the line be sure you've depressurized the system or else youll have gas spewing out the end (there is always… [cont.]
